FRG-7 (v)

FRG-7 (v)
Alignment
Alignment work was conducted basically under the procedure described in the operating manual except for some items done by a different way depending on test equipments available handy.

RF UNIT Alignment:  1.  55MHz Bandpass circuitry
This is to align the passband of 1st IF passband to 55.5MHz..54.5MHz.

BEFORE
The passband was slipped to higher side, ending up with 7.3dB attenuation at lower-side band edge at 54.5MHz from the centre freq. This explains why this radio exhibited low sensitivity at the higher freq within the same [MHz] band since the very first day of my ownership.

AFTER
Aligned to occupy specified passband with nice two-humped freq response. The hollow at the centre freq reads approx 1.2dB.

RF UNIT Alignment:  2.   Balanced mixer
The objective here is to obtain a balance of the 1st MIX by nulling out a leakage of 1st LO that gets through it. The op manual instructs to tune the radio to 910kHz without an aerial hooked up then to adjust the balanced mixer to minimise the level of the signal being received. This method is utilising the image freq in 1st IF when tuning to 910kHz RF, that (image in 1st IF) is, 55.5MHz and is exactly the same to the freq of 1st LO. In other words, when the FRG is tuned for 910kHz RF, it is probing 54.59MHz in 1st IF, but because of the fact that 3rd IF freq is 455kHz, the radio is at the same time also probing 55.5MHz in the 1st IF, which actually is the frequency of 1st LO.  The meaning of the text explanation in equation is 54.59MHz+2*0.455MHz=55.5MHz.  More precisely, the 1st LO freq is not exacttly 55.5MHz, but 55.5MHz+delta, so an actual frequency relationship of the intended freq and image freq in 1st IF is (54.59MHz+Delta)+2*0.455MHz=(55.5MHz+delta), this does not change the fact that when tuned to 910kHz RF you're at the same time listening to the leakage from 1st LO, thanks to the Wadley loop's drift cancelling mechanism which is also working the same way for image frequency.

I left the BM as it was because the signal level of the image was already far too low to move the S-metre.

Recovering mechanical contacts
Aged equipments are destined to experience degradation on mechanical contacts. This FRG is no exception - all the switches, variohms, varicaps except for [MHz] and [Fine] tuning ones demonstrated contact deterioration, that I now fixed by applying contact spray. The photo shows how contact recovering spray is being applied to the contact of  preselector varicap's roter.

The ATT was not working from the beginning, didn't attenuate the signal when I turned the switch to whichever LOCAL or DX. Despite that, I did not really care because I was always using 2 to 3 metre wire as an aerial, which must be of extremely high impedance, didn't match to receivers input impedance anyway so I thought that was the cause at that time, and this poor antenna can not cause RX saturation anyway so the ATT was never of use. But now that I decided to resotre the radio, I took a look of the ATT circuit seriously for the first time and, alas, it is designed to work properly with high impedance aerial. I checked the conduction of the switch and, alas again, found none of the contacts making any conduction at all. So I decided to disassemble the switch to clean the contact. The photo was taken right after I extracted the switch off the ATT/TONE PCB, the work was a pain because I had to remove all the resistors comprising the ATT and wiring to the PCB.

This is how the switch contacts looked like. The other side was almost all black as well. I removed the corrosion (so I think) by ethanol using a toothbrush, and finished with applying a contact spray and wiped it. Pity that I forgot to take a photo of cleaned contacts but was kind of rush. After that I re-assembled the switch and soldered back to the PCB with all the resistors and wires and confirmed the ATT is working properly.

The long Japanese text above is a counterargument for anti-contact-recovering-spray-ists increasingly found in webspace in Japanese language recently. I'm not sure if this kind of argument is there outside Japan so I'll cut down the translation here. Well, to be honest I'm just lazy and not confident in explaining my counterargument above in foreign language. The photo above shows the contact recovering sprays I use, especially the left hand side one is my recent preference that I trust the quality of it.

Removing grease off the VFO variable cap gear

The arrow indicates the part where stiffened grease is.

In fact, this is not a gear. What it does is the trick that stops the main dial at the band edge. It works this way - as main shaft revolts, the washers that has square head race to same direction around the shaft, and their heads begin to 'pileup' one after the other until all the heads including the shaft's one and bearing's one (these are not captured in the photo) align, as seen in the photo. This is very hard to explain but once you actually see it it's very obvious.

Ideally, these washers should have been removed from the shaft and re-greased fresh,  but I was reluctant to do so because it involves removing the flange, that I thought it would be a pain to put it back to the correct position later. Instead, what I did was  removing the old grease as much as possible keeping all the washers and flange intact, by repeating a process of blurring ethanol and wipe the ooze while revolting the shaft. After repeating this for 30 min I applied silicon splay carefully and got nice revolution feel. I'm not sure if I want to recommend this solution because its mixing old grease and silicon together but in the end it seems to be working OK, and looks this clean, and I got the original tuning feel back. The photo was taken after the work applied.

Inside the unit is, although there are some dusts built up, generally in a good condition.

To begin with, I need to take VFO variable cap assembly out to remove its stiffened grease and to replace dial light bulbs.

Extracting VFO variable cap assembly

First of all, remove the S-meter by unscrewing the metal supporter on its both sides.

Next, unscrew the nut that is holding the main dial dram then pull the drum up carefully by avoiding it scratched by the metal above.

Dissolder the four wires that interconnect the variable cap and the IF-AF unit, those are two black wires on the surface and two shielded wires on the rear.
Finally, remove the four screws from the corners of the variable cap assembly.

The VFO variable cap assembly extracted at last. Later stiffened grease to be removed.

Replacing main dial light bulbs

The dial light bulbs were fit to the C shaped metals (indicated by the arrows) using rubber bushing.
The replacing bulb is of 12V, diameter=4mm type. Current rating of both FRG's and replacing one are unknown but I'd expect there shouldn't be much difference between the two, or more likely, there shouldn't be much variance in current rating for this type of bulbs provided its voltage and dimensions are the same. The bulbs I bought came with sockets probably for automobile instrumental panels. The bulb itself, comparing to FRG's, is of totally same dimension (I forgot to measure the length), and the internal structure of the filament and its supports looked exactly the same.  Replacement work require soldering.

It's good to see the lights coming back again. The brightness of the new bulbs looks to be matching to others.
Without noticing, electronics products that use incandescent lamps for lighting have almost been vanished, instead there are recent trend of eye-stabbing high-brightness blue LEDs lighting up things everywhere vulgarly. This soft yellow light of good ol'days is now an article of value.

What is surprising is an amount of work it took to replace mere light bulbs, which are expected to be replaced regularly.  The replacement work even require soldering iron, which is out of the question for maintenancebility for products like this radio, which is more like a consumer electronics than a ham radio gear. I can imagine even in the 70's, when this radio was at its hight, this level of 'fix' was well beyond the skills of ordinary electronics shops found in high street so I guess there was no choice but people ended up with sending it back to the shop for maker fix, or more likely vast majority of people just left it burnt and chose to live with it.

Introduction
I got this unit back in early 1980s in exchange for ICOM IC-3N, that I had purchased just out of curiosity and then immediately found it utterly useless unless I have some friends around to go to fishing or something with.  Although I had no particular interest in shortwave radios designed for broadcasting reception I reckoned that it's still somewhat of use than the IC-3N, thinking it was not a bad idea to relax with overseas broadcasts when 28MHz is quiet.

After twenty some years past..
In the mid 1980s the solar cycle 21 faded away, which means high freq bands esp 28MHz was now dead. So did my ham radio interest. The FRG was now sent to the shed, had to wait almost a quarter century to be powered up again. The photo above is the FRG salvaged last week from the shed, and apart from the filthy cosmetic condition, although it powers up and kind of working,  demonstrates some functional worn-outs like :-

  • Main dial bulbs burnt-outs
  • Mechanical contacts worn-outs everywhere, incl preselector and VFO VCs.
  • Stiff VFO tuning feel, especially when reaching to higher band edge even cranked movement.
  • [MHz] tuning very critical to lock, esp on 1MHz (un)lock warning indicator never turns off.
  • etc, etc
Good news is that these are rather time related deteriorations than troubles so it should easily be fixed after applying some maintenance and alignments.

This is how this just salvaged radio sounds like, with approx 2metre wire hooked up as an aerial.
